About our dog food
Studies have shown that proper nutrition can add years to your pet's life, reduce medical problems, even affect their behavior! However, their nutritional requirements change as they age. At The Sound Pet we can help you choose the right food to suit your pet's breed and lifestyle, and your pocketbook.
We carry only those dog foods that have passed the stringent requirements of The Whole Dog Journal, generally regarded as the "bible" of holistic dog healthcare. Check the ingredient list printed on the package before you purchase any food for your pet. Look for the following: - High-quality animal protein as the first ingredient
- No meat or poultry "by-products"
- No "animal fat" or "meat meal"
- Whole grains and vegetables; no corn, wheat, or soy (known allergens)
- No artifical colors, flavors, preservatives, or added sweeteners
- Organic ingredients
- Origin and date of manufacture
Pet food is regulated by federal and state laws but there is a broad range of approved ingredients. For more information on pet food regulations, the Association of American Feed Control Officials has published a list of Frequently Asked Questions FAQs .
You will not see the large, heavily marketed brands on our list of dog foods. The "big guys" are all owned by large conglomerates (see list below), and pet food is a very small, but highly profitable part of their business. We prefer to deal with smaller companies that manufacture only pet food. They don't spend their money on advertising and promotions--they put it into their products!
We also do not support companies like Proctor & Gamble that do extensive testing on animals for their products, including pet food.
